HAPS Awards

These awards support the mission statement of the Society, which is to promote excellence in the teaching of human anatomy and physiology. Awards are administered through the HAPS Awards and Scholarships Committee.

The awards are briefly described below. Click on the name of any award to go to an award-specific page containing information about eligibility requirements, online application procedures and additional aspects of the award.

Most awards are available only to current HAPS members. If eligible, members may apply for multiple awards in the same year, but may only win one award in any year.  Members may not win the same award for 2 consecutive years.

Most applications require a letter of reference from a colleague or supervisor familiar with the applicant.  Letters are submitted with the application.

Deadline for all applications and supporting material for all 2025 awards will is January 24, 2025. Click on the link to each award’s page below for more information and the respective application.


Supported Awards

ADInstruments SAM DROGO TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM AWARD

This award encourages the innovative use of technology to engage undergraduates in human anatomy and physiology. Award: $1500 to attend the HAPS Annual Conference. Award recipients are encouraged to present a workshop featuring technology in education innovations at the conference. Awards are sponsored by ADInstruments, but use of ADInstruments equipment or software is not required.  Click here to apply!

GAIL JENKINS TEACHING AND MENTORING AWARD
This award is for a HAPS member who demonstrates use of engaging kinesthetic, visual, and/or active learning strategies using inexpensive, everyday props to help students truly understand and retain the more difficult Anatomy and Physiology concepts. In addition, the award recognizes those who mentor their peers to also incorporate this type of learning to benefit more students. The focus of this award is slightly different from other HAPS awards that recognize incorporation of technology and student-centered or flipped active strategies. Award: $1000 provided by Wiley and registration waived for the HAPS Annual Conference.  The award recipient is required to present a workshop reflecting their activities that match the focus of this award at the annual conference.  Click here to apply!

JOHN MARTIN SECOND TIMER AWARD 
This award is for HAPS members who have attended only one previous HAPS Annual Conference and are in need of financial assistance to attend this year’s annual conference as a Second Timer.  Award: $1,100 to use toward attending the HAPS Annual Conference. Applicants may be full-time or contingent college/university faculty or full-time high school faculty currently teaching anatomy & physiology. Award recipients are required to present either a poster or a workshop at the annual conference. There are up to 4 awards available in 2025.  Click here to apply!

MARIEB, HOEHN, HAYNES AND ABBOTT AWARD FOR DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

This award is open to instructors and students from minority groups traditionally under represented in HAPS professions.  This award is part of the HAPS commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and is supported by Pearson.  Award is $5000 and waived registration to the Annual Conference.  Award recipients will be required to present at the Annual Conference and therefore must attend. This award is not offered for 2025.


HAPS Awards

CONFERENCE TRAVEL AWARD

Only very basic restrictions on who can apply.  Recipients HAPS members in good standing and must be teaching anatomy and physiology (or either, very loose definition) with an expectation of continuing to do so.  Recipients are required to present a workshop or poster.  Award: payment of the registration for the Annual Conference and $600 awarded at the General Membership Meeting at the Conference. Click here to apply!
